The Black Mountain College Yearbook: In Focus

Mark your May calendar for an introduction to the Black Mountain College Yearbook! This online archive brings together photographs, printed material, and biographical data in order to document the individuals who brought the influential liberal arts college to life. For those less familiar, Black Mountain College (1933–57) was a progressive institution based in North Carolina that promoted a curriculum focused on interdisciplinarity and collaboration. Many of their students and teachers are well known today, including Josef and Anni Albers, Lyonel Feininger, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jack Tworkov (to shout-out artists represented by our CRSA members).

Amanda Hartman, our speaker, is an archivist and web engineer who developed the Black Mountain College Yearbook. In addition to providing an overview of the college and archival resources, Amanda will take us through the development of the project from spreadsheets to an online database, all while sharing some of the trials and tribulations of presenting archival collections from multiple repositories.
